Exalted Ruler’s Column – June 2020

To Our Members:

Many of you have asked me, “When are you going to open?”

The answer is — Our liquor license is through the State of California. They control when we can open. If we try to open early, it could cause us to lose our license.

When we open, things will not be the same for awhile. At this time, the new rules that have been put into place are:

  • No guests.
  • Hand sanitizer station and temperature checks at the front door.
  • Face coverings must be used when not eating or drinking.
  • Maintain social distancing.
  • The bar must be closed until allowed to resume modified or full operation.
  • Alcohol can only be sold in the same transaction as a meal.
  • Parties can be seated together and do not have to be six feet apart. They must be seated at the same time.
  • Drinks can be served at your table.
  • No entertainment until allowed to resume modified or full operation.
  • All dinners will be sit-down dining.
  • No Cook Your Own Steak or salad bar at this time.

We hope these rules will be relaxed soon. As soon as we get approval from the state we will be putting out menus for Wednesday and Friday night dinners.
This Monday, June 1st, there will be a House Committee Meeting at 5 p.m.
This Tuesday, June 2nd, there will be a Board of Trustees Meeting at 6 p.m.
This Wednesday, June 3rd, there will be a Lodge Meeting at 7 p.m.
We hope to see you back at the Lodge soon. We miss all of you.

Fraternally, Kathy Payne, Exalted Ruler

Exalted Ruler’s Column – January 2020

Welcome 2020!!!

Starting with serious business, the January 1st Lodge Meeting has been canceled . I really didn’t think anyone would want to go to a meeting on that day, so our one and only meeting in January will be on January 15th and it will be Initiation night.

January also brings our annual Weekend in the Redwoods, January 17, 18 (my birthday weekend, just in case you wanted to get me a present, kidding!!), and 19. The weekend starts off with Friday night “Cook Your Own Steak”, followed by Saturday’s CRAB feed and then to finish off the weekend, Sunday morning breakfast. Shuttle service in the Eureka area is available again this year. This weekend remains at $100.00 per person!!! You can’t beat that.

We had our first Hoop Shoot on December 8 with a young lady, Ilya Kelly taking the honors. A special note needs to be made, Ilya’s mom, Julie Kelly, was a Hoop Shooter that made it all the way to Nationals!!! This young hoopster along with her family, especially her Grandpa, Jack Harris and Grandma Lou will be traveling to Ukiah on January 4th for the District Hoop Shoot Competition. If you can make it, please go and cheer our lodge’s representative on!

Come on out and enjoy your lodge this month!

Fall is officially here with cooler evening temperature. October brings us many fun activities to enjoy and get involve in! October is Elks National Foundation month and also it is Drug Awareness month. Let us not forget that our own Brad Smith, DDGER is coming home and he has combined it with Oktoberfest on October 12th. Please don’t forget to sign up for that dinner. It is also one of the last fun raiser for ENF.

Alan Bobillot,PER is our own Drug Czar. He is the Chairman of the Drug Awareness Committee. Alan is planning an event on October 23rd, look for more information around the Lodge on this event.

It has come to the attention of the House Committee, there may be a desire to move the Lodge meeting time up from 7:30 PM to 7:00 PM. There will be a notice in this edition of the Herd Talk to that affect. It will be voted on by the membership at the first meeting in November. If you desire it to change or stay the same, show up and let your vote count!!

We are still in the need of a Kitchen Manager, if anyone is interested please contact me at 707-498-3101.

Let us not forget our annual Halloween Havoc, it is scheduled for October 28th. The tickets are sold in advance $25.00 and it is always major fun!!!

We are approaching our busy season where we will be needing much help as we are an all volunteer organization. We do provide on the job training so don’t let that stop you!!

Don’t forget to welcome Brad Smith, DDGER home at the Oktoberfest Dinner on October 12th!

Exalted Ruler’s Column – September 2019

Summer is in the books and fall is around the corner. Whatever you are doing for Labor Day, be safe! School is in so watch out for the children and don’t ever pass the school bus when it has its red lights on or displaying the stop sign!!

As summer wound down, we hosted Jamboree which was a fun event. We had many Elks from around our district in for the weekend starting with Friday night cook your own steak, Saturday we had four teams competing for the chowder cook off with Novato taking home first place and yours truly along with my team of Scott Reinsmith and Jan Belarde, taking second place. Saturday night we had a fantastic dinner of prime rib with all the fixings prepared by Kathy Payne and her crew. Saturday night featured a dinner show filled with music and song.

To finish the weekend off, James and his crew put on quite the breakfast spread! Thanks to all who participated and supported this event. Our lodge received a check for $1000.00 from the Jamboree Committee which will be added to our scholarship account as we met our per capital in the selling of raffle tickets. Our lodge sold over $10,000. worth of tickets. We had several members in the win column with the raffle.

Reminder, members when you bring guests to the lodge, you are responsible for them, responsible for their behavior, responsible for paying for them. This is a reminder that we will not accept checks or credit cards from non-members. When you bring a guest encourage them to join the lodge. Remember, this is a private club and there are benefits in joining. The purpose of our lodge is to serve our members.

I believe we are getting close to having an Event Coordinator! We are still in need of a Kitchen Manager, if you have managerial skills, contact me at 707-498-3101. We are looking for contractors among our ranks that have experience with concrete work. If you have that experience, please either call the clerk at the lodge or me at 707-498-3101 and get your name on the list. We will be in need hopefully soon and you don’t want to miss out. We will contact you when we are ready to start the process.

If you are a golfer, Scott our Loyal Knight has a Sunday golf tournament scheduled on the 22nd of this month, sign up for it. Scott also has a fun event scheduled in October on the 12th, he is putting on Oktoberfest with our own Hans Gerstacker cooking authentic German food!!! This is also the homecoming for Brad Smith as he finishes making his way around our district inspecting all the lodges. So plan on being at the lodge to welcome Brad and Janet home and support Scott’s fundraiser for the Elks National Foundation.

Mark your calendar for Halloween Havoc, October 26. This event is always fun. Look for more information on this in this edition of the Herd Talk. Remember this is Lodge is yours, come on out and enjoy it, get involved and bring your friends and sign with up to become members!

Exalted Ruler’s Column – August 2019

Summer is sailing by so quickly or so it seems to me anyway. St. Louis was amazing, the National Convention was an
experience that will not be forgotten! Such patriotism, so much red, white, and blue! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The Convention was well organized and the sessions were very informative.

This month brings Jamboree to our lodge, August 16-18. If you have not partaken in Jamboree before, you need to come out to the lodge for the weekend. It starts Friday night with “Cook Your Own Steak” which is always a well-attended event with music and dancing to follow. On Saturday the fun starts with numerous lodges competing for the bragging rights for the best chowder, the best booth decorations, and the best costumes. Judging of the chowders will be at 1:00 pm and this is even an event in itself with each team presenting their tasty delights and the bribing of the judges with libations and even hard cold cash… whatever is necessary to win as they say!!

I’ve participated in this event the last two times we have been the host lodge and every time it has been a great time. Many events have been planned for the day, a Jenga competition will be taking place during the day with a starting time of 10:00 am and if you haven’t played Jenga, you are missing out on a lot of fun. It is even a fun spectator event. You can root on your team or the individual player and as the game continues, marvel at the skill and determination of each team member to remove the blocks successfully without toppling the entire structure. Saturday evening will start at 5:00 pm with a no host bar, prime rib dinner at 6:00 pm, dinner show from Nevada featuring Clint Ingbretson and Ila Selene who do a fantastic job of impersonating Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, and of course, Elvis! There will be the raffling of the lodge baskets during the dressing changes and the Jamboree Raffle taking place at 9:00 pm. The weekend is not over until you have had breakfast on Sunday morning. The price for this weekend of entertainment is $60.00 per person!! So, come out on August 16th through the 18th for a fun packed weekend!

Other business of the lodge, we are still looking for a Kitchen Manager and an Assistant Kitchen Manager, if you are interested please contact me at 707-498-3101 or call the lodge at 707-442-6652.

I hope to see you at the lodge. Remember we are an all-volunteer organization and we can always use more help. The best way to feel at home, is to get involved! You have my number, call me and I will help you find a way to get involved.

Exalted Ruler’s Column – July 2019

July is here and so is our fireworks booth. Check it out. We are offering a 10% discount on your purchase if you present your membership card. The fireworks booth is the major fundraiser for our youth activities and contributions so please support us as we support our local youth. There is a sign-up sheet to help in the booth, call the Lodge and get involved.

This month my husband and I will be traveling to St. Louis, MO for Grand National Convention. This should prove to be an adventure! I am sure our District Deputy will make sure all his “Brad’s Brats” will tow the line! It is an honor to represent you and our lodge. Remember the Jamboree will be at our Lodge this year and the dates are August 16-19. The weekend kicks off with Cook Your Steak which is always a favorite, Saturday will be a day filled with competition and fun. The Chowder Cook-off includes teams from visiting lodges trying to take home the gold and we will also have Jenga games with a play-off of the final two teams in the afternoon. Saturday night will be filled with
good food and fantastic entertainment by Clint Ingbretson and ILA Selene, a dynamic and unique musical duo. As always there will be an auction.

I would like to thank Gary Payne and his hard-working committee that did such a fine job in celebrating Flag Day at your lodge. If you didn’t make it here this year, mark your calendars for next year! We are looking for a Kitchen Manager, an Assistant Kitchen Manager and an Event Coordinator. Look for the ad for these positions elsewhere in this edition. These are volunteer positions but a true backbone to the
success of our lodge.

Exalted Ruler’s Column – June 2019

Summer is here!! Your officers are back from Ritual and the State Convention. Our lodge received two Presidential Achievement Awards at the convention for the year 2018-2019, thank you PER Dennis Hunter!! I hope this year we will earn the necessary points so that at next year’s convention our lodge will be awarded Achievement Awards again.

We will be celebrating Flag Day at our lodge Sunday, June 9th from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. PER Gary Payne has been working on this celebration and this is promised to be a great event that we all should be attending and bring our children or grandchildren to. There will be a spaghetti feed and music. Look in this edition of Herd Talk for more information on this event.

Don’t forget Father’s Day is June 16th and the lodge will be open for breakfast. Bring your father or join him at the lodge to celebrate his special day. This month we will be hosting the Veteran’s Car Show, June 27th from 11:00 to 3:00 pm with awards to be presented at 3:30. Come on out and check out the cars.

Our lodge is hosting the Jamboree this year and we will need volunteers for the weekend of August 16-18. The agenda for the weekend will be: Friday Night Cook Your Own Steak, Saturday will have chowder cook-off, Jenga competition, Prime Rib dinner, entertainment of Clint Ingbretson and Ila Selene (a dynamic musical duo), and an auction. Sunday will finish the weekend with breakfast. If you have not been to a Jamboree weekend, you don’t want to miss this one! All of this for $60 per person.

I hope to see you at the lodge! Remember we are an all-volunteer lodge and our success is because of you!! Volunteer and make our lodge even better. Thank you to all our volunteers!

What a successful month we’ve had to kick off our new year at the Lodge! Both the Board of Trustees and House Committee have
been working hard to make this year even more enjoyable for our members. I thank each Trustee and House Committee member for
your dedication to the lodge!

As of this writing, your chair officers are putting in some grueling practices to get ready to represent the Lodge in the Ritual Contest held in Ukiah the first weekend of this month. We’ll be competing against eight other lodges in the District. We’ll announce the outcome of this contest at our second meeting next month on Wednesday, May 15th. Regardless of the outcome, my thanks to all our chair officers along with coaches Sherie and Kurt Bialous for all your hard work. We’re all coming home winners – ready to impress our new members in upcoming initiations.

We have another busy month ahead at the Lodge, and I encourage you to come on out and enjoy yourselves. Highlights of our May events are featured throughout this issue of Herd Talk. Don’t forget. This is YOUR lodge. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Either contact me in person or drop your suggestions in the Exalted Ruler’s suggestion box in the hallway.

Remember our theme for 2019-20: “Deeds. Not words!”

Exalted Ruler’s Column – April 2019

What is that saying, “Time flies when you are having fun?” It is definitely true! When I joined the Elks over six years ago, the idea
of being Exalted Ruler never crossed my mind. Even this last year, it seemed way off in the future. I even, when I heard my friend Dennis Hunter tell me, “This is something you’ll want to do next year,” it seemed surreal! But, guess what? It is real!!! It is here… Exalted Ruler.

I am looking forward to working with all the fantastic people who make up Elkdom. My theme, or motto, for this year is “Deeds Not Words.” So often we say we are going to do something and we don’t for one reason or another. So my goal is to “Git ‘er Done!” Your officer Corps has been practicing and working hard for the upcoming ritual contest, which is May 3, 4 and 5 in Ukiah. We will represent out lodge to the best of our abilities and hope to bring back some trophies.

In April, we will be having our annual Law Enforcement Appreciation dinner. It is scheduled for Thursday, April 11th. Then, that weekend, on Saturday, April 13th, we will be having another special event: our Elks Kid’s Easter Party. Don’t forget to sign your children or grandchildren up for this event and make sure to include the age and gender of your children. It is always fun to watch the children hunt for the Easter eggs and their excitement when they see the Easter Bunny enter the dining room. Look for more information regarding these events elsewhere in this edition of the Herd Talk.

Sidebar: Purple Pig—Barry Jacobson was the largest contributor. Second place went to Jack Nash and the decorated pig prize went to Pierre Carbonneau. Thank you to all who participated in this event and to Kathy Payne and her kitchen crew and a very special thanks to Shelly Dortch and Rendezvous Music and Vending for counting all the change.
