THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS HERE!
December is a month lled with holiday gatherings, delicious meals, tasty cocktails and gift
giving. No matter what holiday you choose to celebrate and who you will spend it with,
please know that all of your Lodge Ocers, House Committee and Trustees wish you a
wonderful holiday season lled with friends and family and good times. Stay safe and
healthy and we will see you all in 2022!
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST MEMBERS : We have many
new members joining Lodge #652 but they will not be installed until January. If you see
some new faces around the Lodge, please introduce yourself and make them feel
welcome. Remember, you too, were once new and felt a bit nervous about attending
events and dinners. We like to think of ourselves as one big Elk family!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. This year has gone by so fast. I cant believe its
already December. We have a lot of pares and acvies going on this month, so please
keep a safe distance, wear your masks and be kind and courteous to your fellow Elks.
If you havent noced there are Toys for Totsbarrels around the Lodge so if you are
able to, please bring an unwrapped toy to donate to the kids. On December 19th I will be
having a Tom & Jerry party. Come on down and enjoy some drinks and get to know some
of your fellow Elks.
We will be selling prepaid ckets for the New Years Eve party. Be sure to purchase your
ckets to get your seat before we sell out. It should be a great me and a fun way to ring
in the New Year with a delicious prime rib dinner and dancing to the band, Almost Dan-
gerous.
We are sll looking for volunteers in all phases of the Lodge operaons. If you think you have me to contribute
please come down and sign up.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, Sco Reinsmith, Exalted Ruler

In 1875, Mark Twain wrote a letter to his daughter Susie, who was 3 years old at the time, which
he signed "Your loving Santa Claus." You can read it in its entirety below, but first a little bit of
pretext.
Twain was very close to his daughter, all the way up to her untimely death at age 24 in 1896, and
that year she had written her first letter to Santa Claus. Twain, being a writer, couldn't stand for
his young daughter to feel like her work went unheard, so he decided to pen the following letter
to "My Dear Susie Clemens" from "The Man in the Moon" himself.
The story has been widely shared since in anthologies as a cute reminder of the spirit of
Christmas and the love of parents for their children, who year after year don bright red suits and
leave out milk and cookies to keep the magic alive.

"A Leer From Santa Claus" by Mark Twain
My Dear Susie Clemens,
I have received and read all the letters which you and your little sister have written me...I can
read your and your baby sister's jagged and fantastic marks without any trouble at all. But I had
trouble with those letters which you dictated through your mother and the nurses, for I am a for-
eigner and cannot read English writing well. You will find that I made no mistakes about the
things which you and the baby ordered in your own letters—I went down your chimney at mid-
night when you were asleep and delivered them all myself--and kissed both of you,
too...But...there were...one or two small orders which I could not fill because we ran out of stock...
There was a word or two in your mama's letter which...I took to be "a trunk full of doll's clothes."
Is that it? I will call at your kitchen door about nine o'clock this morning to inquire. But I must
not see anybody and I must not speak to anybody but you. When the kitchen doorbell rings,
George must be blindfolded and sent to the door. You must tell George he must walk on tiptoe
and not speak—otherwise he will die someday. Then you must go up to the nursery and stand on
a chair or the nurse's bed and put your ear to the speaking tube that leads down to the kitchen
and when I whistle through it you must speak in the tube and say, "Welcome, Santa Claus!" Then
I will ask whether it was a trunk you ordered or not. If you say it was, I shall ask you what color
you want the trunk to be...and then you must tell me every single thing in detail which you want
the trunk to contain. Then when I say "Good-by and a merry Christmas to my little Susy Clemens,"
you must say "Good-by, good old Santa Claus, I thank you very much." Then you must go down into the
library and make George close all the doors that open into the main hall, and everybody must keep still
for a little while.
I will go to the moon and get those things and in a few minutes I will come down the chimney that be-
longs to the fireplace that is in the hall—if it is a trunk you want--because I couldn't get such a thing as a
trunk down the nursery chimney, you know...If I should leave any snow in the hall, you must tell
George to sweep it into the fireplace, for I haven't time to do such things. George must not use a broom,
but a rag—else he will die someday...If my boot should leave a stain on the marble, George must not
holystone it away. Leave it there always in memory of my visit; and whenever you look at it or show it to
anybody you must let it remind you to be a good little girl. Whenever you are naughty and someone
points to that mark which your good old Santa Claus's boot made on the marble, what will you say, little
sweetheart?
Good-by for a few minutes, till I come down to the world and ring the kitchen
doorbell.
Your loving Santa Claus
Whom people sometimes call "The Man in the Moon"
Our Absent Members Now the eleventh hour when Elkdoms tower is dark with the shroud of night. When father me
on his silvery chime tolls o the moments ight. To our departed members.
My Brother and Sister Elks. There comes a me in any career when it is me to let go, a me to rere. I had rered
from my Law Enforcement career many years ago, but I am not the type of person that can sit by and do nothing. I
was an Elk member and decided that I could get involved when I was asked to run for Trustee many years ago. I was
in my h year as a Trustee when the opportunity to enter the Chairs presented itself. I have been the Chaplain, Es-
quire, Leading Knight and Exalted ruler. I truly enjoyed the challenges and accomplishments that come from being in
those posions. Each is unique and very enjoyable. Most enjoyable is the comradery of fellow ocers. Learning and
working together for the beerment of the Lodge is a rewarding experience, irreplacable.
I had the opportunity to further serve Elkdom by becoming the Great Northwest DistrictBusiness Pracces Chair
for ve years. I worked with the other eight Lodges in our District in becoming beer at the business of Elkdom. I brought up another Elk,
Jennifer Omara, from the San Rafael Lodge to replace me in me. I was appointed to the State (CHEA) Drug Awareness Program Vice Chair,
and aer two years I became the Chair for two more years. This posion was over the nineteen Districts in California and Hawaii. These
two posions outside of the Lodge were extremely rewarding as results of my eorts put into the programs were evident. Lodges became
beer at managing themselves, and Drug Awareness is sll in the forefront of may Lodges.
I was promoted to the posion of District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. This posion is a Grand Lodge Ocer, who represents the Grand
Exalted Ruler of all Elkdom for a year. There are about two hundred in the world of Elkdom. This posion is the person in their District that
a Lodge goes to when they need help or assistance from outside their Lodge. The DDGER inspects all of the Lodges in his district for compli-
ance with Grand Lodge Statutes. I served in this posion twice. Lastly, I was elected to Eurekas Lodge Secretary. This is my second year.
This job is the only posion that I considered a jobin the respect that you are required to be present almost daily, and you receive a s-
pend.
The Secretaries posion is by far the most dicult for me. I had to learn a lot, and my thanks to Treasurer Ernie Nunes for stepping in and
helping me not make too many blunders. Ernie was my predecessor as secretary and mentor. Its important that each ocer bring up an-
other to take their place. I recently turned seventy-seven years old. Although I have no idea of how to feel at this age, I do know that I want
to rere before I become an old man. In that light, I am encouraging those of you who may want to run for Secretary to start now by asking
quesons and taking noce. Formal training cant begin unl an elecon is held, but understand that no one will be put into this lob with-
out help and assistance from others.
I have certainly enjoyed my tenure in various posions in Elkdom, and encourage each of you to explore the possibilies of becoming an
ocer in the Lodge. I would encourage anyone who might be interested in learning more about what is to be an Ocer to aend the
Ocer Recruitment night on December 9th at the Lodge. Several Past Exalted Ruler and other Ocers will be there to answer quesons.
Fraternally yours, Brad Smith
Twenty-six Redwood Roamers went to Klamath RV Park for a fun
weekend of campres, a movie, pot luck and fellowship. It
rained but it didnt lessen our enthusiasm to explore and create
lasng memories. November was a trip to the Benbow/KOA to
have an early Thanksgiving. The food was delicious and the
fellowship around the campres was great.
